· Rated in the Top Ten of The Times’ Good University Guide for the past three years and rated 1st in the UK in the National Student Survey 2010. This is a performance described as ‘stellar’ by the Principal Anton Muscatelli last year.
· Graduates from the Nursing & Health Care School are some of the most sought after in the UK, regarded by many as the crème de la crème of the nursing profession
· Performing against the general trend during the economic downturn, the School’s graduate employment rate was 100% in 2009 and 99% in 2010. Employability is not an issue.
· A predicted 30% of the current nursing workforce in Scotland are due to retire in the next few years. The University of Glasgow’s Nursing & Health Care School is a vital source of high quality graduate nurses and health care professionals.
· The quality of the BN Honours degree on offer at the University of Glasgow means that graduates are headhunted throughout the UK. Many centres of excellence (including King’s College Hospital, London, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge and John Radcliffe’s Hospital, Oxford) are recruiters of University of Glasgow nursing graduates.
· The Undergraduate course is exceptionally popular and as such, stringent entry requirements are employed. The School typically receives 800-900 applications per year for only 40-45 places.
· The School delivers a very different type of science-based Bachelor of Nursing degree from other academic institutions, which is unique in Scotland. The Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses produce clinical and academic experts who are sought after locally, nationally and internationally.
· Evidence exists to show that clinical practice has been changed and patient care enhanced as a result of taught and research programmes undertaken at the Nursing & Health Care School.
· There are 140 students from a variety of professional backgrounds who are undertaking postgraduate research or taught degrees as well as CPD courses. These students are being prepared as change agents for nursing and health care in the future.
· The University of Glasgow’s Nursing & Health Care School offers the only PG certificate in Healthcare Chaplaincy in the UK. This is a compulsory course for new Chaplains. Additionally, 36 students from across the UK are currently attending a unique programme in lymphoedema management, an area which has been recognised for excellence by both the University and on an international stage.
· Honorary Professor Christine Moffat CBE has been recognised by the Nursing Times as one of the 20 most influential nurses of the last 60 years and received the Diamond 20 Award in recognition of her contribution to wound care and lymphoedema management.
· In collaboration with its HealthQwest partners, the School was rated in the Top 10 in the RAE2008 for the quality of its research.
· Research activity is multidisciplinary and is now being integrated with the College’s Research Institutes.
· There is current research funding in place from Macmillan Cancer Support; British Heart Foundation; Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland, MS Society, The Burdett Trust for Nursing and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and Tactile Systems.
